Russia, China, Ukraine, Taiwan and Uncle Sam

Russia, China, Ukraine, Taiwan, and Uncle Sam are in the news more and more and will be pumped for all they are worth for the distraction value they bring in taking as many eyes off  Covid and the domestic failures of the current administration as they can. We have a weak POTUS right now and both Russia and China see that far better than those in our own country.

As things stand right now I will throw my thoughts out here and now, when it comes to Russia moving forward with its invasion of Ukraine it will happen and we the United States and the EU will do nothing more than protest and at the most put into place additional sanctions but nothing more.

The reason why in my opinion the EU will not get involved directly is that Russia has an energy strangelhold over them, Sanctions of some sort maybe but sanctions mean nothing when the natural gas gets turned off and you freeze to death. Russia while not quite the powerhouse it once was is still a very formidable adversary that you do not want to tangle with especially when they are in their own region.

With respect to the United States getting involved over the Ukraine issue I am leaning toward a very slight chance that the US gets directly involved, I do see sanctions as well as the funneling of arms to Ukraine as far more likely ( We are already doing this ) In summation the EU and the US just do not have for the most part anything to gain by going up against Russia in Ukraine and to be honest I think that by the time the world would be able to reach to the invasion it would be all over and Russia would hold most of the country and no world power wants to dig out a Russian bear.

China invading Taiwan for me is the larger global concern I believe this invasion will happen in my opinion, and the United States will be involved. Taiwan makes close to 90% of all semiconductor chips and has long been considered Chinese soil and they want it back for both reasons. We have all seen how China respects human rights and laws, ponder the plight of Hong Kong, Uyghurs, Tibet, and any other of the dozens of atrocities they have committed so you can only imagine how the people of Taiwan would be treated. Add to that the stranglehold the Chinese would put on the rest of the world when they have control of the semiconductor industry, this can not happen.

As I have said I do believe the invasion will happen and China will choose very carefully when they attack and again the United States, as well as several other countries will be drawn in. China must strike very hard and very fast to achieve this, they must overwhelm the defenses of Taiwan's land, naval, and air forces before US naval carrier groups can aid in defense. Japan has pledged support and following that England, as well as Australia, could lend support if in a position to do so. Indian may be a player as well considering their growing economic ties.

There is no doubt that one or maybe both of these potential conflicts may happen and the implications of the top 6 militaries (US, Russia, China, India, Japan, South Korea) all for the most part being involved will be huge, add into this 4 of these nations have nuclear capability and the potential for escalation while always there can not be discounted.

Stay frosty my friends.

Thoughts on 2019 and beyond.

Back in the 80's when I was able to first look at the world with a somewhat educated brain cell I could see that the Soviet Union and the United States of America wanted to play a game of catch with ICBM's.  Being a kid of that era where World War 2 and Vietnam were still very fresh in a lot of peoples minds I turned into a sort of history junkie as it relates to conflicts.

I have come to a conclusion that people like to control other people and force themselves either directly or by proxy and it seems that the end is always the same, we dominate, subjugate and kill ourselves to force a way of life and even an opinion with reckless regard.

We have a whole host of things to worry about as part of the preparedness community and for me that was initially nuclear warfare and while it still is on my list along with a whole host of other things that I am sure many of you share I usually take the sum of all those potential scenarios and come out with a common denominator of a plan that will work best for all events. I am now working to further tailor that plan to include what I see is a huge disconnect and deepening division of the general populace of this country especially as it relates to politics and what that might entail.

As a core basic it is my belief that a general plan should include the following basics:

  • Food
  • Shelter
  • Water
  • Protection
  • Communication
This combination while very general should cover what you will need in most situations, again this is just a basic outline and it will vary greatly depending on geography, population density, personal capability and so on.

Survival is not always about heading for the hills or  rooftop or even getting deep in the bunker, surviving is also about having that situational awareness to know that something is not right and you need to do something in a rapidly executed fashion. If it dos not feel right DO SOMETHING NOW!

Circling back to the current political climate and division we are seeing a level of non-tolerance to the opposite at levels that I think will spiral even further out of control, it seem that cooperation and even talking to an other side is falling by the wayside and turning to censorship and outright violence at the drop of a comment. With the advent of social media and a I want it now and do not want to work for it we have a specifically educated population segment that goes down a very narrow road that has been proven time and time again to self destruction and this should not happen when as a very technically astute society have in the palm of our very hands the knowledge of the world if we just type www. But we don't, we instead decide that our own moral superiority gives way to the reality and fact that history repeats itself.

CNN "Right Wing Blame Game"

Here we go people, the blame game has started, really. Pardon my french and my apologies ahead of time but PETER BERGEN OF CNN you are a piece of shit, asshole and the most insensitive piece of garbage on the planet right now. The blood is not even dried on the streets and you come up with the blame game of who it could be??? You don't know shit and will not know shit for days to come but all you can do is make a sound bite to enhance your own agenda, Piss on  YOU, no wait, having been a firefighter I would not even do that for you if you were on fire, get some facts first and may I remind you asshole that most of the shootings and or bombings have been committed by Liberal Democrats, Report that asshole.

Rant complete and sorry if I offended anyone, actually strike that, anyone that would be offended by that is part of the problem and in that case piss off as well!!

Radiation plume makes it to California, And?

The awaited low level radiation that has been expected to reach the US west coast today has been picked up in a few locations, Sacramento being one. The levels though remain well below anything considered hazardous, keep in mind though that radiation decays over time and the levels released from Japan were not all that high yet. This does not mean that we are in the clear yet as there is still no final resolution at the damaged reactors in Japan, could it get worse? Yes. Could it get better? Yes. The bottom line is that this is an ongoing incident that will have both human and political ramifications for a long time to come.

Here in the US there has been a run on Iodine pills that block the radiation absorption in the thyroid. Is it fear mongering, Hype or a good idea to have the pills? Each and every one of us needs to answer that in their own way and do what the feel is right for them and their family.

A Brief Thought on The Tsunami Warning Systems

We have just had one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded (top 5) off the coast of Japan, Thousands are feared dead and damage will most likely be in the billions if not trillions as a result of the Tsunami. This Tsunami has also traveled across the pacific to touch upon Hawaii and the west coast of the US causing damage. We also have reports that Nuclear plants in Japan are having issues and may have to release some pressure that may be radioactive. As far as the Tsunami warnings I hope that many will continue to head these alerts in the future and not become complacent due to this being a large event. Going up against a wall of water is a loosing battle, elevation and good warning are a key component to dealing with it but depending on where you are you may have hours or minutes to get to safety. Here in the US we are blessed with an abundance of radio and television as well as S.A.M.E. weather alert radios so take advantage of the options.

The Middle East, The Economy, Oil and Food

To say that this month has been interesting would be an understatement, World wide events have been shocking, bloody and historic and it is not yet over. Egypt seems to have been the spark that has fanned the fire to a half dozen countries through out the middle east, fighting in the middle east is nothing new, The area has been fought over for as long as anyone can remember.  Current fighting seems to revolve around the removal of long standing dictators and an eye on some form of freedom.  Now I will never begrudge anyone or any group wanting to break away from a long term repressive dictatorship but there will be consequences. The question arises, who will take over, what will be different, how will my life be better or worse and will I be trading one dictator for another?  Leadership will eventually change that's a fact and more often than not the face changes but policy stays the same, there may be a change here and there for appeasement  but for the most part real change is slow to implement and in fact many people are scared of change due to the unknown. I wish them the best of luck.

100 years ago no one would have batted an eye if the middle east decided to tear itself apart, that changed with the discovery of oil in Persia in 1908 and Saudi Arabia in 1938. Those two events would shape how the economies of the world grew and developed and it is more vital to the world economy now then ever. Like it or not, want it or not the world economy now revolves around what happens in any one country, we are in a sense interconnected like never before. Long ago when Man and Woman lived, worked and died within the range of 20 miles very little outside of that circle was a concern or even known about for that matter, global events were not an issue, that has changed for better and worse.

The events of the middle east are on the radar of many countries due to the fact of trade  routes and yes oil. Oil is the life blood of many developed countries and without it they shut down it's just that simple. I remember and see on occasion those that protest with their signs that read "NO BLOOD FOR OIL" well whether you agree with the concept or not we are and will be for the foreseeable future an oil driven world and for those who want to do without you need to keep in mind that Oil is a part of everything we eat, wear live in and pretty much touch, you would be hard pressed to find an item that is not tied to oil either directly or indirectly. One of the largest areas we can tie oil to is our food supply, we as a whole no longer live in a farming type community, we have gone urban and dependent upon large commercial farming techniques to supply us. Long gone are the days of mule drawn plows, they have given way to half million dollar tractor systems that yes, run on fuel. That same fuel is now also used to truck and ship the food we eat on average over a thousand miles. There is no way we can go back to the old ways and sustain the population levels we have, some say we can not sustain what we have anyway but that's another article.

In closing is is without doubt that we live in perilous and ever changing times, sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse. Also with our constantly shrinking and inter-connected world it seems that even far distant events have an impact upon us. Now more then ever it would be very wise to take steps in order to lessen the effects of these world wide events upon yourself and your family.

Misc Thoughts 2-13

Orthographic map of EgyptImage via Wikipedia
Egypt: So unless you have been in a hole for the last few weeks the people over in Egypt have decided they are done with their president H. Mubarak, well after 30 something years in office I think I would agree. From what I have seen on the sphere here is that there roughly 2 groups of people or 2 trains of thought going about.

#1 Being that everyone is so happy the people of Egypt are rid of their oppressive Government and that they can now move towards something better. Somewhat reminds me of when the Soviet Union dropped communism  and tried Democracy/ Capitalism, They are still trying to figure it out as of now.

#2 Being that many are worried about the power vacuum that now exists and who will fill it, will it be a Democratic or an Islamic form of Government? No one knows at this point but many other Governments are watching and waiting, what Government is chosen though will define the region for better or worse.

There are a few reasons why Egypt is such a strategic area, one being the Suez Canal, this is a vital trade route and if there are any disruptions ( Minor ones when the internet was shut down ) They can affect the global market and create shortages and increased prices that will hurt everyone. This is the plan and goal of the Muslim Brotherhood who is one contender to fill the power vacuum in the country. Another stated goal of the MB is the destruction of Israel as the country shares a border with the country, Currently the two countries have a peace treaty and the military is honoring it at this time but with new leadership comes new or disregarded foreign policy. Needless to say Israel is watching very closely the events that are unfolding.

USA:  Same stupidity different day it seems. The ATF is catching more heat by the day for the Project gunrunner episode where they apparently let firearms be taken into Mexico and where one was used to kill a Border Patrol Agent , Check out  http://sipseystreetirregulars.blogspot.com/   Mike V. has been covering it along with David C. over at the http://waronguns.blogspot.com/

Unemployment dropped to what 9% but we only added around 36,000 jobs, Um I am going to call B/S on that one, we need in this country to add 120,000 to 150,000 jobs every month just to keep up with the amount of new people coming into the job market so until we see huge numbers coming in every month that 9% means nothing, It really means nothing anyway as it does not count underemployed or those who have Quit looking, it is a feel good number and a flat out LIE.

I saw here the other day where a Congressman or a Senator said that not having a budget and the result would be congress shutting down might not be to bad of a thing, well I have to agree in a way that it would be good because then they couldn't spend and waste tax payer money but alas I woke up from that wonderful dream because the system is rigged in that they have to stay in business or the people will starve and die or not get their checks. Damn.

Cabin Update: We are working on electrical so there is not much to show but I will have enough to make a post of it here soon, we are going to try and pull the 2/0 wire today so if that happens ( Weather permitting  ) I will try and get some of the highlights up.

Get Internet Access When Your Government Shuts It Down, Sort OF

Does your government have an Internet kill-switch? Read our guide to Guerrilla Networking and be prepared for when the lines get cut. Article here

By Patrick Miller, David Daw, PCWorld

These days, no popular movement goes without an Internet presence of some kind, whether it’s organizing on Facebook or spreading the word through Twitter. And as we’ve seen in Egypt, that means that your Internet connection can be the first to go. Whether you’re trying to check in with your family, contact your friends, or simply spread the word, here are a few ways to build some basic network connectivity when you can’t rely on your cellular or landline Internet connections. Article here
This is a good article on one option to consider if or when the net was ever to be shut down here, I look at it as a back-up to a back-up. The article has some technical speak to it but what doesn't these days.

Communications During Civil Unrest or Riots

CAIRO, EGYPT - JANUARY 28: Riot police fire w...Image by Getty Images via @daylife
We know here from recent events such as in Egypt, Iran, China and other countries that they will clamp down on electronic communications when they feel it is going against them. With the explosion in the last 20 years of several types of personal communications devices Governments have sought ways to limit the flow of information both going out or in. It used to be that news papers, radio and television were our main forms of information and they were either owned or tightly controlled and regulated by the Government.  With the advent of cell phones, Blackberry, Facebook, Myspace, Twitter and text messaging the grip of Government censorship has been lessened to some extent and we are now able to see things that are happening worldwide that we couldn't before. Governments though are working hard  to increase their control of censorship on these new information outlets, recent efforts can be seen such as in Egypt where they are trying to shut them down to stem the tide of riots in the country.

Now how does this translate into anything that might affect you here in this country? Well call me crazy but  we from time to time have our own riots here, not too often but we do have them and they can be nasty, ugly, deadly and generally someplace you don't want to be. I also have no doubt that our own Government has taken under advisement the pro's and con's of shutting down communications during times of unrest, we currently have an ongoing debate about the internet kill switch, but my gut feeling says they are looking further then that. One case in point that I think they will site was the rash of "flash mobs" created by twitter account users that created mini on-site riots and general mayhem.

We here in the US and other countries have become very dependent of our wireless toys as forms of communications to the point of where we might compare not having them to drug and alcohol withdrawal, I know from my personal standpoint that I go nuts when I can't plug in and I am sure some of you might have the same issue. Having a good flow of information regardless is very important and you should always have some sort of a backup, some options include AM/FM radio, Ham, CB, Multiband Scanner anything to keep you in the loop during a disturbance. Information can be a powerful thing, it can tell you whats coming or where a problem is and help you in deciding where you want to be during that. Another benefit of having some type of non government controlled communications can the the ability to stay in touch with friends and family, food for thought.

U.S. farmers are being called upon to put more acerage into production

Farmers are being asked to plant Millions of acres here in the US to prop up dwindling supplies of corn and soybeans worldwide.  The U.S. Department of Agriculture is expecting 15-year lows for corn and 40-year lows for soybean, current pricing for these commodities are $6.40 a bushel and $14 a bushel respectively.

Bad weather in the form of both drought and floods have had a severe effect on some of the worlds food production, add in an ever rising population and you have a recipe for disaster, riots and instability. Here in the US we have seen food prices rise dramatically and package size shrink so we are not immune to this problem, I foresee a rise of  backyard gardens this year by some families to start to offset rising food prices.

Below are some additional articles that I have come across in this area.

Students riot over food in China

Frustration Builds Over High Food Prices In China

By JESSIE JIANG / BEIJING

Students at the No. 2 High School in Liupanshui City of southwestern China's Guizhou province had endured rising living expenses for months. But on November 22, after a new round of food price increase - though a relatively minor one of no more than 50 cents per meal - they had had enough. More than 1,000 students gathered in school canteen, smashing windows and vandalizing the cafeteria facilities.  Read the rest
Seems things aren't so rosy in China, Little do these students know what happens when students riot hard for other reasons, with the Tiananmen Square Massacre being censored they most likely don't know how harsh their government can be. But I digress, it looks like the Chinese are having some inflation issues and it is not sitting too well with some people. This will be interesting to watch as time goes on.

Wheat / Grain Missing.....Again

UPDATE 2-Trader, bank probe missing grain in Ukraine, Russia

It would seem that Grain is a popular item to disappear over in Russia/ Ukraine. Today we see that 30 million dollars worth can't be accounted for in a silo in the Ukraine. 2 days ago there was a report of  30,000,000 bushels of wheat missing from Russia.

I think there might be a little funny business going on here, fraud, theft, it never existed. Either way I am sure this will affect prices in some way or the other, most likely not in the way we want either. Food IMHO will become a volatile commodity at some point, wars have been fought over it in the past, wars are being fought over it now in some in some 3rd world places. If you have the ability to stock up, do so, choose foods that have a long shelf life and if I am wrong the worst that happens is that you saved some money by buying more now versus later when the price is higher, it always seems to go higher.

Looks like we have another group of ticked off students again, this time in Rome.  It seems like everywhere you look people want to riot because the time to pay the piper is here. Overspending at some point catches up with you or your country and yo can't avoid it as we can plainly see by events happening around us. We here in the US are not immune, it will just take a little longer. The cuts that we need to be are all third rail in nature but cuts will have to be done, cooking the books will not work. 100 Million-Franc Russian Wheat Shipment Disappears, Matin Says

This article is over at Bloomberg

Long and short of the article is that 30,000,000 bushels of wheat pulled a David Copperfield and disappeared. Well to me that's a whole lot of something that you don't just loose unless it was in a huge ship and it happens to sink in a storm. Someone knows something and I am sure it will come to light soon enough.

I wonder in these times we are in what other foods have disappeared as of late that have not made it to the wire, part on me would think that this would be on the rise as as the world economy seems to be still heading south.
