Have a plan

It's here on the beach and if you live or work here you are a little screwed, do you have a plan?

This event will cause many people harm both physically and economically for years to come. If you were directly involved in business that is ocean derived you are going to take a hit, sure down the road as lawsuits are filed and claims are paid you might recover but what about the right now?

Do you have cash reserve? Do you have a place to go if you have to move out of the area? Whats your plan?

This is a disaster for sure and it will be debated to death and then some but for the now lets look at bugging out.  If that is your plan, you should have a general plan that can cover multiple disasters man made or natural.

Having a dedicated vehicle to leave the area in would be nice but in reality we would be bailing out in what we have, our daily driver. ( at least until we win the lottery )
Having our vehicle in tip top shape maintenance wise and a full tank of gas ( or close to it ) would give you a good step up. Do you have some supplies stashed in your vehicle? Maps, GPS, compass. One piece of equipment that I think everyone should have in their vehicle is some form of communications, one of the simplest, easiest and cheapest would be a CB radio. While on the road there is almost always information available on local conditions, knowing what is going on will help you plan your route, remember knowledge is power.

I have always been partial to COBRA radios because they work and can be modified in many ways ( not all mods are legal ). The model shown is a cobra 148 GTL series this comes with 120 channel capability (40 am, 40 upper sideband and 40 lower sideband). The only additional capability I wish this unit had is the weather alert feature, this covers the national weather emergency band and is activated even when the radio is off. In the big world of radios there are more expensive, better and worse but this is a proven radio and there are hundreds of thousands of them out there so they must be doing something right. No matter what you do, add a radio to your bag of tricks.

Doom and gloom? Or it's all good?

It seems that here lately no matter where you look, read or hear that everything is going to hell in a hand basket or that there is not a problem in the world.

How many of you out there would go thru information withdrawals if the power went out, I know I would, being the news junkie that I am.  For me if the power goes out I really want to know if it was the storm 20 miles away or if it was a semi that hit a pole around the corner.

Call it a weather alert radio, tornado alert, or a civil emergency alert system having one with you during an emergency can give you a wealth of information that can help get you thru the situation.

Radio option

For those looking for a slightly more secure form of 2-way radio communication these might be option. They work on the same principle as military frequency hopping radios, but in an economical price range that we can afford. So far I have seen mixed reviews on these but I think that they will give you a better form of privacy than what is currently available, but still keep to the rule of not repeating anything on the airways that you wouldn't say to Mom.

In addition there is also a model that will enable you to send a text message and remain silent, A very good option.

Interesting Times

May we live in Interesting times
Chinese Proverb

We here in America are a very diverse lot and that brings out some of the best of a society but it also brings out our divisiveness too. All one needs to do to see this right now is look at the health care conundrum.  People are both happy and also very upset to the point that there are lawsuits flying and the ink is not even dry so to speak. Very few Americans in this country will disagree  that some changes in health care need to be made, well something always needs changing right? Changing is what this country does, we seem to go from one extreme to the other and we are right now in a " what can I get from the other guy or Government" stage, I think they call that Socialism. Either way it is un-sustainable as all we need to do is look to Europe to see our future. Europe keeps their  program going by having a constant influx of new immigrants to pay for their system, that changes your culture and it changes how you do business. With global travel being what it is and people wanting to move around as much as they do you will have varied diversity, opinions, culture and many other mannerisms that fit in well in that persons home country but won't fit in very well elsewhere and there in lies the problem. We all know that religion and culturism draws the biggest amount of problems with re-guards to integration and often it can turn to violence, many wars and civil unrest have been started in that way.  Ted the uni-bomber while wrong in his application of violence was right in that technology will both help and hurt us, there was a time when geographical travel limits would keep us separated and in out own lands, somewhat culturally isolated. As the ability became available we started to move around and mingle so to speak. What was acceptable for one was not for the other to the point of killing each other over it and to this day we still do it. Person to person, people to people and government to government, we now have the ability to do so from long range and unseen, we can shape the world and never be seen face to face. America stands on dangerous ground with enemies on the inside and also those on the outside waiting for a perfect opportunity to create havoc and most people in this country have no idea or flat out don't care, at least until it comes into their immediate sphere of being, at that point is it too late? People had better wake up and smell the coffee and if you do then please pass reality on and be prepared  because I think we are in for an ugly time....
